Iron Ore/Magnetite in dirt?

When I pull a magnet over the dirt it sticks to the magnet then when I blow of the dirt there is black powder.  Is this magnetite, iron, or what is it (it is not from a disinigrated  piece of metal, its all over)??  How would I collect this powder fastly and efficiently??
Thanks

A black hard shiny sand that sticks to magnets is magnetite. Hematite is magnetic, red, and soft. Yellow ochre is about the same as hematite, but is yellow-brown.

The magnetite can be smelted as such:

Depending on how easily a magnet picks it up, a magnetic sweeper may work (A tube full of magnets with a wheel on each end and a handle).
Then a driven wheel ( possibly stainless steel ) with magnets on the
inside surface are cam driven to move away after 2/3 rotation and
drop the attached Iron withe debris into a bin feeding a belt to
successive group of magnetic separators.
