Is it possible to sort your old emails into folders without doing it yourself?

I'm currently using hotmail. Let's say I have 400 OLD craigslist emails, and I want to sort them into the craigslist folder. Is it possible?

Hotmail does have a filter option, however it only works for new mail coming in. There is no way to sort existing email's in hotmail. I use outlook express for my email, anything moved to outlooks email can be sorted after the fact. When I access my hotmail folder in outlook, I highlight all, move to inbox then run the rules. Everything goes to it's designated folder.

If you do a search for craigslist and then on that search click "select all" then you can move them all to a folder. I know this works on gmail but you'd have to try it on hotmail, i don't know.

gmail doesn't use folders, but they use TAGS of sorts. So, if looking at ALL mail, you will see them all, but if you look for only the tag, you get only the mail sorted into the folder that is not a folder :-)

if you route your e-mail to outlook express or outlook then you could write a message rule and apply it - i.e. if message comes from x recipient then send to x folder.

MSN Hotmail Help explains how to sort by address Options>Mail>Custom Filters>Create New>Advanced Filter.

Once you've done that, you might want to forward them to an account on Gmail or another service that offers email tagging. Tags are much better for sorting large numbers of emails than folders- when used properly, they allow things to be categorized in more than one way at the same time, and remain more flexible for the future.

I can't remember if hotmail allows you to setup a filter anymore. Used to be you could filter by something like a keyword or a sender, and send the message to a folder. I abandoned hotmail a long time ago for gmail, hotmail is way to 'busy'.
