Is my axolotl sick or hurt?

Hello there,
I have had a axolotl for a few months now and i have noticed he has a white patch on his side and on his head its white and sort of fluffy looking and i don't  know if something is wrong or is just color on his skin? I have added a photo of him (but its not to clear because i didn't use a camera flash on it) he is a Wild type i think and he lives in a 2 foot tank  on his own with heating around 20'c-18'c and a filter and i clean it all out very often and he eats things like worms, shrimp pellets, pieces of fresh beef or snails ( all of these i make sure are fine and healthy for him to eat)
The only thing strange about him is that he has a few extra fingers on one hand (but he had that  when i got him).
It would be great if anyone could help me with this question and could tell me if he's o.k and/or if you know what to to do.
Thank you from,
CrazyBassFisherWoman and Norbert the axolotl,

Hi There! I am an axolotl breeder and can certainly point you in the right direction. It would appear that your axolotl is in the beginning stages of getting fungus. This can be caused by too high of a temperature (over 68F) or poor water quality. At this point you should put him in a tupperware with plenty of water and a lid, and put it in the fridge. I know this might sound weird, but be assured your axolotl's metabolism will slow down and be better off to fight infections. The cold water won't hurt it, they come from glacial fed lakes. Along with the cooling, a daily saltbath as described in this link: http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-beginner-newt-salamander-axolotl-help-topics/f48-axolotls-ambystoma-mexicanum/f58-sick-axolotl/72698-salt-bath-picture-tutorial.html

If you follow these steps your axolotl will be back to health in no time. Also read this caresheet and follow closely http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Ambystoma/A_mexicanum.shtml

DO NOT GO TO A PETSTORE FOR HELP, AND DO NOT USE ANY FISH MEDICATION ON YOUR AXOLOTL. SALAMANDERS HAVE EXTREMELY SENSITIVE SKIN AND VERY FEW MEDICATIONS ARE SUITABLE TO USE ON THEM.

Read through the links and if you have any other questions don't hesitate to email me.

Thank you Jesskb!
He's now been in the fridge two days so i will give him a salt bath tonight!
The only thing is this morning i got up and noticed he had a bit of white on his gills so i think the fungus must have spread a bit,
Thanks so much!

Hello there, We just got a baby axolotl a week or so ago. He was very active at first and now he just kind of lays a lot and is not swimming. My daughter is really worried that something is wrong with him, should we be worried??

Hey
I bought a young axolotl a couple of weeks ago. I Put it with my two other axolotls. He passed away 6 days after. I done a full water change. My black axolotl has stopped eating not long after has not ate since. My gold one also didn't take food last night. In the morning I did another water change. When I got home in the afternoon both my axolotls had white kills and going to the top for air. I have checked the pH levels, ammonia , nitrite there Wright. What can I do to help them? THANKS kristy
Hi Kristy2010,
I have only owned an axolotl for a few years now so i don't know too much, but i have read that sometimes axolotls refuse to eat when the water gets to warm for them, as for going to the air do you know how often they go up? Some Axolotls do go up for air every now and then but if they do it a lot it does usually mean a problem, one thing is if you have a filter in your tank have you checked it is the right size/strength for you tank?
Sorry if none of this information is helpful but i will keep looking for anything that sound like whats happened.
CrazyBassFisherwoman.
Thanks for the reply.

Same here have only had both my axolotls under a year. Was watching them both yesterday they were going for air a fair bit yesterday. I know the white gills is a fungus. Thanks anyways : )

Where are you getting it's water from? Are you using any kind of treatments in the water to get rid of chemicals like chlorine that are often added to tap water? Your local pet store will have the chemicals you need to help improve the water conditions.
Hi mpilchfamily,
I just get the water from the river (its a very clean river too) its filtered before getting to the house so there are no bugs or leaves and stuff in it and i check to PH too, so it's about the cleanest water you can get!
I don't use any chemicals in tank,
thanks

My guess is that its a fungus of some sort. Most aquarium supply retailers carry anti-fungal preparations for fish and amphibians. There may be someone employed at the store who can help identify what you need if you take in some pics for them to look at.

Hi Burf,
Thanks a lot! I thought it looked a bit like a fungus, some people say you should give it a salt bath or put it in cold water to fix it, do you know if that will work?
Thank you!
