Is there a way to access a desktop hard drive from a laptop using an ethernet cable?

There's been an error on the computer and I need to install XP again. I can run the computer enough to perform basic tasks, including transferring files. So I wanted to know if there was a way to get the files on to my laptop using an ethernet cable.

A normal ethernet cable won't work, the cable you're looking for is an "ethernet crossover cable".

"An Ethernet crossover cable is a type of Ethernet cable used to connect computing devices together directly where they would normally be connected via a network switch, hub or router, such as directly connecting two personal computers via their network adapters."
