LEDs or even EL wire that reacts to sound (not just an audio line)?

I want to know if it's possible to create a set-up that will allow me to utilize a small (mini) microphone and then filter the sound to have specific LEDs react according to the frequencies.  The filtering might need to happen through the use of custom built crossovers in order to filter sound, and that's fine.

For simplicitys sake: let's say I want lows to light up red LEDs, mids to light up blue LEDs, and highs to light up green LEDs based on the audio that is around me.

I don't want to have to tie into a phycial speaker or audio out as this needs to be extremely mobile.  It needs to be able to be battery powered as well.

I'm seeing TONs of projects out there that take advantage of the physical line out or tap into the wire as it goes into the speaker.  Unfortunately, this won't work for what I'm wanting to do.

I think I should be able to use LED strips to hook up to this unit as well!

The easiest to do it is with an Arduino. What you WANT is called a spectrum analyser, or audio spectrum analyser.
