Making LEDs flicker?

I'm building a costume piece and I really want to have a gem flicker different colors, using LED backlighting. I know I've seen products that make the LEDs "chase" or "run" but, I want these four lights to go in a circular motion, so that the gem looks like it just has light flickering different colors inside or behind it. Can anyone tell me how to make that work or is it impossible?

This is one instructable that will teach exactly how to do this.

All you need to do now is arrange those LEDs in a circular shape to suit your design.

The circuit consisting of an LM555 timer and the CD4017 ten Counter and will continuously cycle each LED in the Q0-Q1-Q2-Q3-Q0 etc.

Different LED colors will require slight variations of the 270 ohm resistors.

Depending on how large of a piece you plan on illuminating, and how tech savy you are, check out this website, they have programmable premade LED rings that you can set to do almost anything you want to. They are easily programed with an Arduino board.

Can you solder and read a circuit diagram ?

if I can't, I married an electrician. I'm sure I can find someone who can.

Normally this is done using a small microprocessor and playing music - The output goes to the LED rather than a speaker.

If you want to reproduce this buy a cheap flicker T light and hack it.
