Making a difference in the world?

What if I want to make something that will make difference in the world but I can't think of anything.

Hi robertsrock,

I think the most successful products always relate to an inventor's personal interests and passions.

Do you love animals? Nature? Helping others? Cycling? Within any area of interest, there are always problems to solve. I would be happy to help you brainstorm if you would be willing to make a short list of 3-4 areas that interest you the most.

Let's get you on the path to inventing a thing!

I like sports. but what I was thinking was something for military or police,

If you'd like to design something for the military or police, as a way to get started, I would suggest interviewing members of those groups that you have access to and ask them if there are areas of their jobs that are challenged by outdated equipment, or if they have been forced to cobble something together themselves to fulfill a need. They may be able to provide some possible directions to explore and apply the inspiration/research lesson to.

Also keep in mind that often, once you're used to doing something a certain way, even if it's not as efficient as it could be, it's hard to see the need for an update. So observing them on the job (if you have access to someone who will let you shadow them) is also a great way to notice an opportunity for solving a problem through better design that they may not be aware of.

One other important thing to know, is that products for the military and police are highly regulated and there would most likely be many hurdles to jump through in order to enter that market, but don't let that keep you from trying to solve their problems! Just know that the road to that market has a few more bumps and turns than those to other commercial products.

Happy inventing and let me know if you have any other questions!

thank you very much Paige. if I do try to invent something do you mind if I show you, and then you give me pointers.
but thanks again for the advice.

Of course I don't mind! I would love to see your work when you're ready to share it. :)

I have been thinking of an iron man suit for police officers

They are actually working on power suits right now and already have working prototypes. Look up TALOS. Here is something. There are more videos too. Although if you can improve on this, more power to you.

thank you

Nothing is impossible! I would start by choosing a small component of the whole and focus on just that first so you don't get overwhelmed. And for a little inspiration, check out this site:

We also offer great classes in electronics, robots, arduino, wearable electronics, and metalworking – which would all help you on the road to suit manifestation.

Let me know how it goes!

I was not sure if an iron man suit was impossible what do you think?
