Motor reversing?

While you noted the simple manual motor contoller can't reverse the motor, couldn't a DPDT polarity reversing switch be placed downstream of the motor controller to allow the motor to be reversed? The controller still does its thing controller power to motor and the polarity reversal switch just selects which polarity goes to which side of the motor. Sure you need to let the motor coast down to a stop before reversing rotation direction.

The reverse contactor could be thought of as essentially a DPDT switch that has been internally wired to reverse motor polarity.

Instead of controlling it mechanically (with a switch lever), a coil is energized to determine the motor direction.

While you could theoretically use a switch, depending on the size of your motor, you might need a fairly heavy duty switch to handle the amount of current that might pass through it.
