You can't make a knife without some raw materials. If you don't have something for a blade YOU CAN'T MAKE A KNIFE. And a knife probably would be a great tool to have in most survival situations. So, your superior knowledge would fail you there.
Now, thinking about shelter, it would be ridiculous to carry around a portable shelter with you everywhere you go. But say your motorcycyle konks out 30 miles from the nearest friendly person it would be nice to know how to put together some type of simple shelter. Especially when it starts getting cold and an unexpected sleet storm rolls in. Might be nice to have a knife in your kit and not have to take pieces off your cycle to make one.
So, you can see that while knowledge is very important for survival tools and supplies are just as important. You must tailor your kit to fit the expected need and hope that you can cover the unexpected by adding knowledge.
