Question about survival kits.
I've been interested in survival-ism for as long as I can remember, and I've seen oodles of instructables on how to assemble the best survival kits. But over time, I've come to wonder (and this is where you can help me), isn't the best survival kit knowledge? Like, instead of constantly carry a knife or something with you wherever you go, isn't it better to just know how to make a knife, and such?

Your brain is your best survival tool they taught me that one in search and rescue training, but you always want to have a back up to your back up (another thing search and rescue taught me). So in this case your back up to your brain which is our primary would be the kit and the back up to that would be the knowledge. Because you always want to be prepared for the worst but you also have to know how to use your tools like the saying goes "a fool with a tool is still a fool".
Knowledge is needed as well as tools. If you were stranded in the middle of nowhere with a survival kit, and didn't know how to use it, you would be screwed. For example, even if you had a knife, without knowledge you could break it using it for the wrong purpose or on something too large. You have to have both knowledge and supplies.

Now, thinking about shelter, it would be ridiculous to carry around a portable shelter with you everywhere you go. But say your motorcycyle konks out 30 miles from the nearest friendly person it would be nice to know how to put together some type of simple shelter. Especially when it starts getting cold and an unexpected sleet storm rolls in. Might be nice to have a knife in your kit and not have to take pieces off your cycle to make one.
So, you can see that while knowledge is very important for survival tools and supplies are just as important. You must tailor your kit to fit the expected need and hope that you can cover the unexpected by adding knowledge.
