Question about winding coils.?

So i need to wind some coils, and i suddenly though about it, and now i need to know if im on the right track.

When winding coils, will winding the second layer, back over the first layer, in the same direction (for example clock wise) cancel out the coil?

also, i bought a galvaniced threaded rod, thinking it would work as a core. it would work right? What if i had a 8 turn primary. Should it be under the secondary coil. Or could i wind the secondary to the side of the primary?

Direction of the turns is the only important factor,

Winding WITH the same direction allows for more closely packed windings, because the wires arrange in a hexagonal grid, but the wire has to pass under all the other windings once per pass. Winding back/forth doesn't allow the grooves to line up and means the windings line up in a square formation, slightly less packed but doesn't have to cross itself repeatedly.

Galvy rod should work. If I recall, you want the coils stacked on top of each other, but someone who knows for sure can comment on that.

Thanks! :D, ill try and stack the coils.

one problem though. The primary is a 8 turn coil, and the secondary is a 1k+ coil, so the secondary is a lot wider. does it matter as long as the small coil is centered?
Centre it best you can, and experiment with longer coil versus thicker shorter coil...

Ferrite cores are quite good. You can often request free sample cores from manufactures, or salvage one from an old transformer.
I can't comment on coil design really (besides to say, shape, round, square, etc. matters) because the only coils I've wound were for a separable transformer where the two coils were on two objects that had to be able to move apart.
