Self Rising Flour?

How can you tell how much leavening is in it? Is there anything else different? I bought some for a recipe and would like to know how long it is effective.

Self rising flour seems to be a waste to me - it's not too hard to get out a spoon and the baking powder :)

Self rising flour is a combination of all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. It is typically fortified and contains some preservatives. You can use it cup for cup in a recipe, but you will need to omit the baking soda and salt a recipe calls for to compensate.

Check the 'best by' date to see how long your package is good for. If the expiration has passed you can pour a bit into a small bowl and add a little bit of vinegar to test it. If you see bubbles it should still be good, however, if you notice your baked goods not rising as much as they should, the baking soda is probably not active anymore.
