Stempunk : Where can I find all those gears?

OK, so in a lot of instructables featuring steampunk items require gears and the like to make it look cool. I've tried taking apart things (old plug-in phone, keyboard, etc.) to try and find some, but I couldn't :( So my question is does anyone know of a toy or tool that contains many gears, while still being affordable?
Thanks,
MrSalvador

Pretty much any mechanical toy will have gears in it, espeically motorized cars.

Printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, VCRs all have gears in 'em.

Either try out your local thrift store or give your local Craigslist or Freecycle a look. (Around here I find a printer on the cub about every week.)

+Mod up. Computer peripherals that are mechanical usually have a quite a few gears.

It's landfill fodder anyway. Recycle what you can.

Old, broken mechanical clocks and clockwork toys are the best source for decorative purposes. The clock gears are usually cut or stamped brass and the clockwork toys are usually stamped steel gears.
Check secondhand stores, thrift stores and garage sales. Also, contact local watch/clock repair shops and see if they have any broken units that they will sell to you.

Get clocks at a thrift store.  The old ones have brass gears.

If plastic will work.....here is a picture of a dynamo light from Harbor Freight.
They come 2 to a package for $8

I'd go with the brass.
