what is difference in recipes that ask for 3 whole eggs and one yolk versus 4 whole eggs?

I heard adding extra egg to cake mix makes it better-why?

When a recipe calls for 3 whole eggs and one yolk, it is adding fat (the yolk) without adding much extra moisture. This way the baked good (or cake) will be delightfully moist without messing up texture with too much moisture. If you accidentally add four whole eggs you just might have to bake it a bit longer to remove the excess moisture. Either way will work!
