Trouble with French Knot?

I'm really having a terrible time with my French knots. I keep doing everything that you've mentioned (and I've even looked at other articles and videos to help) but my knot just always keeps getting pulled through to the other side, resulting in just a tiny straight stitch.

I've hooped my fabric very tightly and do my best to keep the thread taught on the needle, but nothing seems to be working. When I hold my thread tight, the wrapped part just flies off above the needle before I have a chance to pull it through the fabric.

Any tips or tricks? I've been trying to do them off and on for three days now and I'm still unable to do them. :(

There are a couple things you can try!

1) A bigger needle. It could be that your needle's eye is too small, causing a lot of friction when you pull the floss through. The eye needs to be fairly large to make a nice hole for the floss - if it's too small the french knot may pull right through as you tug, you may not be able to get the floss through the knot, or the fabric may rip!

2) Try using less strands of floss at first! Maybe start with 3 strands and see how that goes. Sometimes this is a good way to get the feel of the French knot without all the fighting with the floss and fabric. :)
