USB Led music visualizer? How?

I know how to connect leds to a USB cable and plug it in to make a usb light, but now i want to make it dance to music coming out of the computer, possibly by changing voltage or using the other black and white wires. Its possible a program may be used. Thank you for your input and solution.

if you were to do it that way, you would need to use an arduino or know how to wire an program several ic chips.

here is the start of a project: http://makekw.org/node/17. Controling the software is another issue... using the mic would be much easier...

0.o An unexperienced novice thinks....... VU meter it is! :D Thanks alot.
Hey man you can make something much cooler than that if you are ready to experiment with an Arduino. You can make something called an LED music visualizer. Here is a site that gives detailed instructions on how to make one:

Hope it is useful!
How do you want to feed the sound source to the LED, from the USB or by a microphone ?
