Using Ultrasonic Sensors?

I basically want to make a customisable reversing sensor in that I want to be able to use the sensors from a basic car system and be able to add and change the audio and visuals outputs and the distance at which they are triggered.

What is the "standard" system of which you speak ?

You could modify the output from any of the aftermarket ones to do what you want.

That's good to hear. How do I go about it?
First get your basic car system, and gain access to the sound output and/or the LED display. Then yuo can use say an Arduino to process the requisite signals and allow you to convert them.

OK I am not sure what you need to know but try reading through this it explains how to connect an ultrasonic detector to a microprocessor and how to program it.

Without knowing your experience with electronics it's hard to say how easy you would find doing this any other way as US sensors are notoriously hard to play with successfully.

That uses the SRF005 I want to use a "standard" automobile reversing sensor.

Would that be possible using the information you recommended?
If you visit the picaxe forum and register (free) do a search this subject has been covered before - it isn't easy to use bare sensors you will need a lot of support logic or microprocessor support.

Perhaps an easy start is to use the Vellman type kits or this

Thank you for your reply rickharris. I looked at all of them before I posted my question.

If I missed one of relevance I would appreciate you telling me which one.
