The best method for building outdoor planters is to use wood that is resistant to rot like teak, cedar, or redwood. There are sealants you can use to protect the wood from moisture, if you chose another less rot-resistant wood, but you'll need to reapply the coating every few years. Look for an exterior waterproof urethane.
