What can I do to save money while building a PC?

I am a bit of a gamer and I love my xbox 360 but people keep telling me that PC gaming is a million times better. I have bought PC games before and i have a small collection of games from my childhood including worms fortress, thief one and two and Diablo one and two with expansion packs. I have very little income, but I do plan on getting a job soon and saving some money and one of the things I would like to do is build a custom PC so that I can play my games. I dont need the best stuff, just good enough to play old games as I'm not going to pay over $50 for a game. I have never built a PC before and I know very little about hardware, but I have a friend that can help. So does anyone have any ideas on how to cut corners while building this? I would also like to build a case for it so any gaming case ideas will also help. P.S. I'm in South Australia, so I may not have access to some stuff.

Depends on what you get and how effectively you are at chasing down the best prices, but I would figure somewhere in the $750 to $1000 range would get you a decent gamer that will adequately handle most any games out there.

I have a few tips for you.
Determine the maximum amount you can spend.
Budget your money.
Don't spend a ton on a case, get one with functionality, not fancy lights and see through panels.
Build with the intent of upgrading the components in the future.
Get a mid-range CPU, it will handle most games and you can upgrade later. Same with a graphics card(s).
Don't spend big bucks on DVD drives.
Things to do:
Bargain shop, look for sales, discounts, coupons and free shipping.
Look for package deals, buy a mobo/CPU combo, a case with a PSU and fans, etc.
Most importantly, don't scrimp on the motherboard. Get the very best you can afford without blowing your budget. This will be the foundation of your build and how much you can upgrade in the future.

Thanks.
I already have a DVD drive and i dont need to buy a case as I have one or I can build one I think. How much do you think it would cost to get the cheapest stuff that can still run games?
