ignoring all of the obvious issues of Vista it really comes down to user ability and Vista really cut down on the user's ability to maintain or administrate any type of computer that could be considered advanced I.E. not using mainstream software(Windows Defender???) Xp is the way to go, while it has some limitations (and not nearly as fun or efficient as linux :D) generally its a well supported system that still allows some room for flexibility. although, PCLOS(rpms anybody?) with winex does allow a decent amount of windows programs and is a really user-friendly OS. plus, it too is livecd with some ntfs support.

I prefer Ubuntu and Red Hat (Thats Linux to all you n00bs), but between XP and Vista, XP FTW! I got pwned in vista because It wouldnt let me see what king of graphics card it had, so I cant use sketchup or WoW.

XP ALL THE WAY! I had to fight tooth and nail to get xp on my laptop, but god it was worth it for the reliability and the lack-of-bugs Vista is still to new to be reliable enough for my purposes.

How did you manage to get a new laptop with XP? I'm in the market for one right now and I think that the status quo of XP would be so much better than Vista - just from what I've heard over the years and on this site.

Well, this was about a year ago so they may have closed up the loopholes, but they used to have 2 that had the option, and when those left from the website I just called in and said, look, I will take any laptop available with XP, and so they found me one and we got it all figured out. Just call in and ask, you will likely get Ackbar from the ghetto in India, but give it a shot anyways because it is your best bet.

Depends on the hardware you run. Things like graphics cards that run DirectX10 are not being fully used by XP (which cant natively run DX9) so vista would get the most out of your computer.

I use XP on my laptop, but frankly I'll take Mac OSX 10.5 any day. We have OSX 10 on both of our Macs and it is so much better than windows.

Try and establish some pattern to the crashes. Is it when you do the same thing that it crashes? Is it the same error message each time? Usually, if there is a pattern to it the cause is a specific driver or program. If it occurs randomly, then it may well be a hardware issue. Also, does it only happen if the computer has been on for a some time? If so, it may be an overheating problem. Reverting to XP will probably fix the first type of problem, but not the second. The way I see it, Windows Vista is like Millennium edition. It was pushed out before it was ready because the marketing guys had their way. Windows 7 should be the 'finished' product.

If you are certain the crashes are caused by Vista, you could consider going back to XP. It is true that XP is more stable, and runs more programs, but Vista has other things, like DirectX 10 support, you should take everything into account, and then decide if you go back to XP or not.
