What does "return" do?

In the program to light the LED when the button is pushed, there is a segment which reads:

if (current == last)

return;

I know what the return statement does generally, in the C language, but have never seen it used in programming Arduino boards before. I realize this is not an Arduino board, of course, but do not know where the code would return to.

It kicks you to the beginning of the loop!
