So, go to this webpage:

http://arduino.cc/en/Guide/Windows

(or the other guides for mac or linux)

and follow the instructions. Keep going until something happens that isn't working -- tell us EXACTLY what step that happens at and we can help :)

The uno requires a driver to tell your operating system how to 'talk' serial over usb. Without that driver, windows will keep saying "windows could not find a device driver". The download/install links are on the link I supplied.

After the driver is installed, plugging the arduino in should give the familiar 'du denk' hardware connected sound from windows -- and the arduino ide should be able to see the new com port. From there on it is a matter of using your sketches.

all that happens is it says that the device is unknown.
Does it enumerate in the USB system ?
Does it appear in Device manager?

Don't panic. Unless you have to confess to wiring something dumb to it in the outside world.....

Hey. I just bought mine and it shows nothing at all. Changed cables but nothing is happening. Im using Windows 8.1. The 1st time i connected it, it just turned on some lights now theres nothing.

Check if the cable is okay - find another cable, external hard drives and some modems have them. (I had a cable that supplied power, so some lights went on, but data connection was broken most of the time.)

Uninstall and reinstall the IDE once again precicely following some tutorial.

how could it be the cord?
What do you mean its not recognized by your PC? Are you not able to upload any sketches from the IDE? Do you have the right board and com port selected in the IDE?

no all I did was download the software and then plugged in the board and it says that a unknown device is plugged in; should I download the driver for arduino uno?

First take out the Fibonacci numbers, small ( joke )
Don't do anything rash and in haste.
Because this critical time is where newbies damage their toys.

Then if this your first hookup
You need to tell your editor which port you are plugged into.

Quadruple verify instructions forward & backward.

Why did you need to update ?
