What is the origin of the "Weenie Man" song?

There are several versions of this popular campfire song, but this is the one I'm most interested in.

Weenie Man Lyrics:
I know a weenie man
He owns a weenie stand
He sells most anything
From hotdogs on down
One day I'll join his life
I'll be his weenie-wife
HOT DOG! I love that weenie man

Does anyone know the origin, and whether the song would be under copyright protection?

So I just ran across this. And though I know this is old, I feel like I have to answer it. The story in my family has been that my dad's aunt actually wrote the song a long time ago...in the early/mid 1940s most likely. From what we know, she wasn't a musician or a performing singer or anything, but she wrote the song and sang it around the house and maybe when with her friends or something. How it became so popular, nobody in the family has a clue. Somebody she sang it around must have remembered the lyrics, and it just got passed around as a camp song. I don't know if she ever got a copyright on it. But being a performer of traditional American music myself, I know that most music back then wasn't copyrighted but other people would play the song and say that they wrote it and get a copyright for the song in their name, so it's worth searching for it through the U.S. Copyright Office.

My Grandmother used to sing this song to me when I was a young child back in the mid 70's and early 80's... All of my siblings have grown up knowing this song and we have passed in on to our children...

Not a clue. In 51 years of living, I've never heard the weenie man song before. I see you're also in the USA, so I have to abandon my "Is this a UK thing?" followup question.

Where did you hear it? A summer camp or something?

As for copyright, just do a search on google. Use "copyright weenie man" as your first search term.
