What's with these "Companion Cubes"?

I've seen multiple Instructables regarding these little buggers, they're kinda cute little things, and I was wondering if they were based on an item from a TV show or movie, as many Instructables so frequently are. The reason I ask is because so many people have made projects on them that the cubes must have been mass exposed to a large population, possibly via TV or fine cinema...or maybe a video game?

I'm just curious...

It's from valve's hitgame portal.

In portal you use portals to travel through puzzelrooms. Ofcourse to get to the end of a room you must solve a puzzel.

In one of these rooms you get the companion cube to accompony you through the test chamber. It's just a lifeless cube but there are such exellent dialoges (between you and the computer that runs you through the chamber) and so much love is given to the cube that it became a cult symbol. Also because you can't finish the testchamber without the cube you need to get through all these puzzels with the cube and then when you come to the end of the chamber the computer tells you to destroy the cube.

Everyone has to destroy it so everyone felt heartbroken and throughout the next chambers you are constantly reminded about how you killed the cube. The only friend you had in the game (there are no other characters but the CC, the computer and you)

Although the cube does nothing and says nothing it became enourmesly popular and many people made stuff from it (I made the companion cube rubik's cube tutorial) but other stuff like chairs, earhangers, tie's, boxes... everything you can imagine is made with the companion cube image.

It is an awesome game btw and even casual gamers get alot of fun out of it :D

Play portal from Steam. The companion cube is a block that you carry around with you in the game. You dump it on switches to open doors. It's kind of a puzzle/physics game. I just wish it was longer as the fun runs out too soon :(
