Where can I find old salvaged painted wood?

I'm looking for the type of wood you would see on an old farm house, with the paint peeling off.  Everywhere I try for salvaged wood is just stuff for flooring, but I want something that is beautiful all by itself and I can use to make furniture...  The best stuff would be something very rustic and even damaged.  I keep seeing it in people's yards, but I don't know where I can find it elsewhere.  Does anyone know where to find this type of wood?

Check out the The Building Materials Reuse Association directory. They have a comprehensive listing of building materials recyclers for the U.S. and Canada.

If you aren't willing (or able) to go out into rural areas to search for falling apart buildings and ask for permission, than you could look for a salvage/contractor recycling business.

Make friends with a remodling contractor.  Most of them would be happy to let you carry off any of the "trash" you want.  Especially if you show up with donuts, cold drinks, beer or something like that as a thank you.

I've gotten cabinets for the garage that way.

Can you find any builders locally? The sort of workmen who might be paid to rip off the old wood and replace it with new stuff, then build a fire or take the junk to a land-fill? If you can, try offering to take this wood-waste off their hands for nothing, or failing that a few $.

You could try asking the owners of the pieces you like, or you could make your own old wood - the process is called "distressing".

Google for distressing furniture.
