For older books, published before 1923, visit:
http://www.gutenberg.org
http://manybooks.net
http://www.munseys.com
http://www.feedbooks.com
http://www.webliterature.net

then do a search for "free e-books" and you will find many more links.

Newer books are under copyright protection, so you will have a much harder time finding free e-book versions. The exception is http://newfreebooks.com , recent books that the authors have intentionally put online for free.

If you have a library card go to overdrive.com and try the library search thing ,if you find your library the web sites have a million different E-books.
How about if I send you to Wikipedia rather than Google?

I'm fond of the Baen Free Library myself, but perhaps one of those other 261 choices would appeal to you.

Damn, doesn't have my favorite author.
Depends on how recent your author is, Project Gutenberg is copyright free, so generally only early 20th century and older. Other options (with the same problem for the most part) are Google Books and Internet Archive. A few library systems have access to electronic books, you could check your local library and see if they have them or access to them from another library. Have you tried using "author's name" +download OR pdf (or favored extension) in a Google search?
