Which 'loop(s)' do I use for single crochet when working past the first row?

I am new to crochet. Which 'loop(s)' do I use for single crochet when working past the first row? The one nearest to me, furthest, both or does it matter? I have researched this a bit and have not found a clear answer. Thanks!

Either one, and you can enter the loop from either above or below. The look will be different. depending on which you choose. Alternating between the two gives a very interesting texture. Not sure if I can post pics in an answer, but will try to get examples to you.
