Note too that there are transparent/translucentpaints for glass -- including some which crystalize attractively as they dry -- sold for mock-"stained glass" work. Depending on the effect you're trying to achieve these might be useful. A good crafts store should either have them in stock or be able to get them for you, or of course you can websearch.

Check out the "Enamels" line of paints made by FolkArt. This paint is designed for use of glass and ceramic, and when dried is water-safe. It's even dishwasher-safe!

You can use regular artist's paints.  Either oil (very slow drying) or my fav. acrylic.  Fast drying and reasonably permanent.  I have a friend in Mexico City that drinks cheap wine in odd shaped bottles so he can paint scenes of Mexico on the sides.
