Why do you need to current limit HV transformers to power Tesla coils?

I keep seeing websites that talk about current limiting the HV transformers to power Tesla coils and I don't know why it's done. Is it a performance, safety or consumption reason?

Primarily safety. If you don't limit the current output, then a short can (a) cause the transformer to burn out, (b) cause the object bridging the short to melt/burn/explode, (c) kill you.

Thanks I'm using a modified MOT so I don't think it'll burn out but it would certainty explode something or kill you.
