I'm from canada, and I have built 3 pneumatic cannons.

You need to read the criminal code and find the sections on firearms -- then find the firearms act to find the definition of a firearm.

As it turns out, potato guns fire OVER the threshold of kinetic energy of a firearm, but FAR under the velocity requirement - and since BOTH have to be met, then they are legal per the firearms act.

THAT SAID

In canada, ANYTHING that could be used as a weapon is a weapon under the eyes of the law if they so choose to see it that way. It's not illegal to walk down the street with a crowbar, but you'd better believe you'll be hassled for looking dubious.

Back on topic - I've spoken to MANY mountie/bylaw officers/city police (I work for 911) -- and none of them would outright charge you for having one. If you were walking down the street with it, they'd take it away but no charges. Best bet is to find a friend with a ranch or go out of town to somewhere the property owner doesn't mind you going all newtonian on him.

IF YOU FIRE ANY PROJECTILE AT ANY SPEED AT ANY PERSON IT IS ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON AND YOU WILL GO DOWN HARDER THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE.

Play safe.

So then where would firing pumpkins out of truck size air powered artillery fall? Would you need a permit?

Frollie is from Canuckistan. It's different there. Viva Montana! Oh, wait, are you proposing firing them over the border?

Sometimes size does matter.

There is a video down the page on this site, its really great. No they don't have a permit, but they do watch out for aircraft getting in the way. It fires 600 MPH squash. Its in England

If you want to know if something is legal, you need to check not only your national laws but also your state laws and local (city/town) ordinances. First stop should probably be either your local police department's public relations desk or your town clerk or both; they can tell you where else to check. Your local public library's reference desk may also be able to help you look this up.

Why don't you ask a Mountie? I'm in Texas, what do I know about Canadian laws?

Do they do "pumpkin chunkin" there? Its an annual event in the US and one of the categories is air cannon. Some of them are so huge they are mounted on semi truck beds. No propellant other than air is allowed. The contest is to see who can propel a pumpkin the farthest.
