arduino code writing. how do i set up code?

i bought an arduino and im wondering how to copy the code from instructables. do i copy it straight? or do i have to edit it? can you please comment or edit the attached document and send it to maxfranky@hotmail.com

Your post doesn't make a lot of sense..... but what you probably want to do is:

1) download the Arduino SDK
2) open a new sketch
3) paste in the code
4) click "run" to check it compiles okay
5) download to your arduino

If that doesn't fix your problem, leave us more details :)

Be cautious of preformatting in other text editors, or any automatic case formatting (Serial.print is different than serial.print).  docx (word 2007) is really bad for stuff like this.

In instructables it makes sense to use the [Source] button to post code, it should maintain code exactly as it was typed.
Seconding the .docx complaint. Word 2007 (and earlier versions, too) really loves to insert invisible characters in the text that make using it for coding purposes a royal pain in the keister. You can try pasting it into Wordpad or Notepad to help clean it up a bit, but even then you'll run into weirdnesses most of the time. And never, ever cut & paste directly from a web page, either. That can be a nightmare.
Jedit is a nice free, folding, programming editor.

Not a helpful file format - I can't see it. Post it as text.
