can I glue nylon sheets instead of sewing?

I want to make a tarp but don't want to stitch the waterproof (pu coated) nylon. Has anyone tried glue or welding with a hot domestic iron?

Sorry - I should have made it clearer. It is to join 2 pieces of fabric so they end up double width. I suspect there is too much force for them to stay together when the wind blows; this is what triggered the question. I have used hem tape satisfactorily to make curtains for a motor caravan.

you could try heat bonded fusible webbing. Dritz makes one called stitch witchery you can find it at any fabric store in the notions section. it's pretty straight forward, you just fold over the edge stick it in there and iron it. supposed to be permanent.
