can anybody tell me a good robotic kit other than lego sets ?beginners kit?

You don't say what kind of robot you want to build, so it's difficult to make a specific recommendation. The Solarbotics link that Steve sent you last week has a section dedicated to beginner's robot kits. Take a look there and see if anything looks appealing.
