It's not a showstopper (haha) but it'll certainly make things harder.  Film school will help teach you techniques and give you access to equipment that you may not have access to otherwise.  It will also give you experience using that equipment, should you be seeking employment in the industry later on.  Lastly, you will make connections in the industry and friends at school that will be useful to you.

It is good to have a BIG GOAL like that.  Aim high and even if you MISS that goal, you will hit something.  I wanted to be an ASTRONAUT.  But I didn't have what it takes.  So I ended up an electronics technician.  But I am happy.  So don't be surprised if you cant hit your goal..... you will hit SOMETHING that will probably be related to that goal.  Maybe you will end up a camera operator or  soundboard operator... or an assistant to the director. Good luck.

If you're still in school join the drama club.  Next semester take a film, acting, directing class.

Join a community theater group.  Join another one if possible.  The only way to break into either directing or acting is to do it.  And do it every chance you get.

Even if in the comm. theater you only get to help with the sets at first or take tickets or be an usher.  You have to start somewhere.  Let them know that acting/directing is the most important thing in you life.

Lots of actors didn't go to film school but almost all of them acted in school and comm. theater to get started.

A few directors didn't go to film school but it's harder to get noticed as a director unless you've got a history of producing noticeable stuff.

Good luck and are you giving up rock stardom?

YES!!!
However, there is a lot you can learn from film school. Also, if you decide to go to school, look into other programs, like telecommunication,  or Digital Arts and Sciences. But, a degree won't get you a job. 90% of the time directors get hired based on their work.

Also, making movies is a great way to learn. I don't care how old or cheap or camera is, make SHORT films, and keep making them until  you get better, then make some more. I don't care if all you have is a digital snapshot camera that has a video option, don't let lack a resources be an excuse to stop working.

Your first film may suck. Here are two I made:

They're not great, but I learned a lot from my mistakes, and so will you.

Good luck.
