can i program a toy car to be an autonomous car?

my graduation project is an autonomous toy car . the user specify a destination by his mobile phone and the car must go to the specified destination by it's self. of course the software will be too large , so where the data like maps are going to be saved? what kind of hardware should i use? is it possible to build this autonomous car ?

Yes it is totally possible, my chemistry teacher made an autonomous dust buster using an rc car as his base

Who says the ACAR may not use the cloud or be an extension of it ?

What actually is the cloud but a computer, ergo put the main bulk of software in a remote computer .... your car's personal cloud.

The car needs a GPS, a magnetometer, two or more light_sensors with IR_light and some_feelers as a minimum.

The cloud software navigates by reading data from the previous text line and steers your car, while avoiding obstacles.

Hmmmm. Interesting project, I strongly agree to what rickharris said,

However I want to shage share what came to my mind as soon as i saw your question

you can probably use two mobile phones for this purpose. One with the user and the other with the car, and the user controlling the car by sending inputs( either manual or automatic) to the car and guide it to the destination. ( you might need to develop such software to send your commands from one phone to the other or just search for any existing one).

(my graduation project is an autonomous toy car.)

As this is YOUR project at I assume a degree level - YOU should be making these decisions yourself based on a study of what has already been done and an analysis of the problem as a whole.

the user specify a destination by his mobile phone and the car must go
to the specified destination by it's self.

YOUR going to need to know a LOT about mobile communications, mapping and Spatial awareness.

of course the software will
be too large ,

OF course? How do you know at this time.

so where the data like maps are going to be saved?

Back to the first statement - Your project you need to decide. Analysis is everything

what
kind of hardware should i use?

Back to the first statement - Your project you need to decide. Analysis is everything - There are so many choices that even if I were prepared to research and offer you ideas it would take pages of explanation. Commonly used systems might be - Basic PC communicating for the donky work with some kind of controller - Arduino, Picaxe, Raspberry pi, Beagle bone,

is it possible to build this autonomous
car ?

Other have as Mpilchfamily says DARPA for example. HOWEVER in general they have budgets of millions of $. On a small budget aware robots are possible at a small scale to prove a principle

http://sbolt.home.xs4all.nl/edz.htm

is an example.

No more help - Earn your degree.

For many years now DARPA has been holding competitions for teams to build an autonomous car that can drive itself through an obstacle course. These teams spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and have a full size car to work with.

Not saying you can't do something similar with a toy car but it will need added hardware to be placed around the area so it can find it's way. You could use a Raspberry Pi to run everything on the car but even with a good map of the area stored it needs to know where it's at on that map. So some sort of reference points need to be placed around the area. Be it light's or some other signal a sensor on the car can read. Or you can make it like a line following bot. It can follow the line and know which turn off to take to reach the destination of choice. But if it gets moved off the line or onto a different line it will loose track of where it's on on it's internal map.

Good luck
