can you melt hotglue in the oven, or will it smell?

sure you can, might smell a little but it'll be okay. Make sure you take it to the right temperature. Normal glue sticks should be melted at 250F. I imagine 4 minutes in a wax coated Pyrex dish at 250F should turn a bunch of sticks to liquid.

...i've used a microwave now that I think of it, worked fine. Smelled, but not more than 10 hot glue guns going at once to do the same thing would do.
