cant upload codes from computer to arduino?

I just got my first arduino today, it is the mega 2560, it came pre-loaded  to do this. I wanted to do something else though so i took everything off and made this. After selecting the board and serial port from the tools menu in the programming software and verifying the code i uploaded it, everything seemed to be going okay 'till i got an error message:

avrdude: stk500v2_command () : unknown stus 0xc8
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to
overide
               This check.

avrdude: stk500v2_command () : unknown status 0x01
avrdude: stk500v2_disable () : failed to leave programming mode

I get that message no matter what code i try to use. i tried uploading it with the board unplugged and got the same message so it seems like it thinks theres a bad connection but the power comes on when it's plugged in. Also, my power light comes on in red, shouldn't it be green?

The problem maybe that you haven't installed the drivers for the arduino. When it automatically installs the drivers it gives a error so you should manually install them you can get the full instructions here they are for arduino uno and windows XP but can be followed for any arduino and any windows operating system. For linux check this out.Or as iceng says there may be some bad connection. Also check the troubleshooting page  and this one too to solve your problem.

Just because power comes on does not mean signal lines are correct.
In 50 years of EE the most contrary issue for me always was cables.

Review wiring, especially to from lines, I don' t do that Arduino myself.

i checked all of the connections with am ohmmeter and they all seem to be good.
Often a talk line should go to a listen pin and a talk pin to a listen line.
Failing that it becomes your pc.

Did the arduino people have any suggestions ?

its not the connection, its something to do with the computer.
So....... How long have you known ?
