digital camera?

I have seen somewhere a cut down digital camera rehoused in a wooden box.

the thought strikes me-

I have several redundant Olympus lenses could I successfully take a point and shoot digital camera, remove the lens, mount the camera body in a box and add my Olympus lenses to the front to make an exchangeable lens digital camera?

I realize I would need to get the lens to CCD distance right but that doesn't seem to be all that difficult - I can engineer an adjustable mount if necessary.

it seems a pity to have all these lenses and nothing to do with them.

Opinions guys?

This can work fine if you overcome some obstacles.

The first is that many point and shoot cameras are looking for a signal that the lens has extended or that the lens is focusing.  So if you pull off the lens you will have to supply or disable this function some how.

There is no issue on image coverage.  I assume the existing Oly lenses you are planning on using are from 35 mm camera.  The sensor of the point and shoot camera is much smaller than a 35 mm frame.  Oly has a system called 4/3 with uses a sensor approx 1/4 of the size of a 35 mm frame so when I use one of my existing 35 mm lenses on my E-510 it's like using a lens that is double the focal length.  Now my 135 portrait lens is similar to a 270 lens.

Wouldn't you have image plane size issues ?

Here's a good link to image sensor sizes.

Think more 1/3"

If you have control of the depth (lens to CCD distance) the focal area should be able to meet the CCD area.
