do you remember when computers first came out without auto dial modems you would put your land line phone into a holder and dial the number to connect? I would like to do the same with my cell so I don't have to pay data charges. what do you think? can this still be done?

I don't know that cellular audio is high enough quality to work at the higher baud rates, even if you made a direct connection using transformers and the headset jack. At 300 bps, you can probably mail a floppy disk faster than the data will transfer.
It could be done, but "why" would be my thought. The 300 baud rating above is partly because it pre-dated some compression techniques but mostly because of lack of transmission quality between the modem and handset. If I were doing this, it'd be for fun-only and I would bypass the speaker and microphone in the modem and wire a cellular headphone cable to it. The better method is to see if your phone can connect via bluetooth or usb. Many models can then be used to dial a data service, especially smart phones.

. acoustic coupler modem I hope you have lots of time - IIRC, they are typically 300 baud.
