Have you got access to the ceiling of the room from above at all ?

I have seen a very interesting star ceiling effect made from led christmas lights covered over by a layer of black speaker grill fabric. It was all just stapled to the ceiling, and the lights shone through the fabric like a theatrical scrim.  With the leds off, it looks like a plain black (kinda lumpy) ceiling. I bet optic fibers would work even better.

I like the false ceiling idea.  I'd install the lights and hardware on the face of the ceiling then build a frame around the room to attach some cheese cloth like fabric to.   then the lights would show thru the fabric at night but would look like a white ceiling the rest of the time.  The cloth should only be about 2-3 inches off the ceiling.

Yeah, that was the only problem with the one I saw: No space between the lights and the fabric, so it looked lumpy in the daylight. It looked good in the dark, though.

And I have spent a few hours with my sons dismantling remaindered fibre optic Christmas trees into useful packets of fibre......

I feel an 'ible coming on.

The pros solve this by building a flat panel with a decorative frame around it, installing the fiber optics into that, and mounting the whole thing to the ceiling. Websearch will find some manufacturers' sites with examples of that approach.

The other solution, of course, is the old-fashioned fluorescent/phosphorescent paints. Low tech, not as bright (unless you pump them with UV), but they do still work.

Use adhesive backed acoustical panels (they're made of foam or some fibrous stuff).  Push then ends of the fibers through the panels from the back.  You can cut slits in the back (adhesive side) for the fibers to run through to the edge of the ceiling.  You'll probably need a big floor so you can put the panels down and set up the pattern and everything in advance, before laying the tiles on the ceiling.

The down side is that the light box and power supply will be visible, sitting in a corner of the room.
