It depends on the application. Generally any hydrocarbon can burn. Edible oils, mineral oils alcohols, gasoline, diesel, tar, wood, charcoal, hay, etc. If it is suitable as a substitute depends on what you intend to do with it...

flame based tools can often use other fuels but this can generally be unsafe. Alcohol or gasoline might work but i would stick to the original fuel for safety
