how can i let a picaxe 20m communicate with visual basic?

hello every one,
i've just recieved some picaxe chips (the 20m version). I'm trying to communicate with the picaxe in visual basic but i can't get it working. I've searched quite alot on the internet and already saw this instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/Control-real-world-devices-with-your-PC/ .
but it doesnt work for me. could any one help?
(i use the axe027 download cable configured on port 2)

Which part are you having trouble with - the physical connection or the programming side? Be aware that the 'm' series Picaxe may not be the best for your application as program flow stops after issuing a serial input command until it's received a data byte. ('x' series - e.g. 20x2 has a background receive.)

As you haven't had a answer yet and I've no experience of VB to Picaxe, I suggest you ask HERE - The Picaxe forum.  There are some real Picaxe experts there.  However, you will need to give them FULL details of the problem and what you are trying to achieve.  If it's a hardware question, be prepared to give a circuit diagram and ideally, photos of the board.
They are very helpful there but they do expect a well-defined problem.
I've just had a look at the Instructable you mention - I'd missed that one.
I'll be going through that in detail when I get a chance.
