what if you were to use a air purifier to ionize some air maybe connected to your device and the way i'm imagining it it would cost about 8000$

I'm going to try and build an electrolaser during the Christmas holidays. I'm also very interested in them and I have designed my own circuit for an electrolaser. Like what Opcom said, there is a design with 2 parallel nitrogen lasers, which is what I'm going to do.
A TEA nitrogen laser is easy and cheap to build and I am pretty sure it has enough energy to ionise the air.
To power the lasers - live and return, a flyback transformer can produce thousands of volts and it can also be used for the electrical shock that travels across the beams. Most flybacks aren't too bulky or heavy for a portable version.
You will also need a high voltage rectifier to convert the transformer's AC output to the lasers' DC inputs, which don't work on AC.
Timing is simple: have the electrodes on before the lasers turn on, but keep them separated so they don't spark. When the lasers turn on, the electricity will automatically flow across the LIPC, to your target, and back to the electrolaser all before the beams die.
If you have experience with building devices like this, I'm sure it will be easy to build an electrolaser.
If I build a working model, I will upload a video of it in action on youtube.

Sadly I have to say that I haven't gotten anything to work yet. I have no idea what amount of energy is required to create a laser induced plasma channel of any useful length. The idea behind using something as cheap and simple as a TEA nitrogen laser to create a laser induced plasma channel is that multiple photons from the laser can combine their energy to ionize a single atom, or in the case of air, a single molecule (called multi-photon ionization). With enough energy this could create a thin channel of plasma which would allow a high voltage electric current to travel to the end of the laser beam and either go to ground or return through a second laser. The chances of this happening are increased by upping the amount of current put into the laser (more electrons leads to more nitrogen molecules excited and more photons emitted). This is limited by the volume of nitrogen to be excited, so the length of the electrodes must be increased as well (see instructables on Blumein circuits to see what I'm talking about) and with more space along the electrodes the capacitors can also be increased in size - that can only be good news. Long story short, making the laser and the power source bigger will inevitably lead to a working electrolaser, but it will reduce its portablilty.

Wow, I'm sorry but all of you guys are not very bright a electrolaser is not that hard to build certainly not millions of dollars, thousands at the most. You simply must be goos with lasers and circuitry. Basically all you have to do is get or make a laser powerful enough to create a plasma channel and then quickly release energy that would be stored in high capacity capacitor like a super capacitor and there you go, electrolaser!!!!!! It is actually really simple just very hard to get the timing right but i think you could do it, I am designing a high powered one right now. Keep trying on it and tell me how it goes


Any luck on your design of the electrolaser. Question, when you release a super capacitor, how much electricity do you need or basically how much would be used each time you fire the laser.

Mere money aside, there is a patent on this topic. I think it uses two parallel nitrogen laser beams. The beams from the laser in the invention are intense enough to ionize the air and the electricity simply put flows out one beam's ionized channel, through the target, and back in through the other beam's ionized channel. Find the patent and there are your theoretical instructions. I don't think it's been done though. ? I think one of the practical problems is the short lifetime of the gain in nitrogen, maybe 400ns? so evertthing has to be precisely synchronized. Find that patent anyway, it is very interesting. There was another invention, a military experiment like that, had all the peaceniks up in arms. I agree with the others, it seems beyond the means and expertise of most people, maybe most experts too.
