how do I restring my Earthquake mini-cultivator?

Pull-string on my tiller came out- how do I open the inner housing, which I assume contains the spring that I think my be kinked, and restring it?
Thank you in advance.

Have you looked in your operator's manual for the expoded view of the engine? It shows you that there are 4 bolts you must remove to take the assembly off of the engine. If you don't have your manual, you should download the PDF from Earthquake. See page 26.

As for how to get into the mech, I cannot be sure, as I have never seen one of these. If it is anything like the old Briggs and Stratton pull starters, there are 2 tabs on the bottom you must gently bend up to access the rest of the mech. From there it is a simple matter of restringing , etc.

My one other piece of advice is to take pictures at every step of the way to make sure you put things back together correctly.

Thank you all, yes, I opened the upper housing and removed the cord, but there is one more screw inside that is keeping the spring inside. It just spins and spins, is there a trick to getting that sucker out of there?

If this screw is in the middle of the assembly, ie., the spindle or hub post, then it sounds like the post is broken and you will probably need a new assembly. If you can remove the screw and take the rest of the assembly apart, you may be able to repair it using parts from the Sears Hardware Store screw/bolt/nut aisle. They have threaded posts and other things that you can use.

As for how to get it out, I'll let someone else help. I have no personal experience with that model.

Looking at the manual:
There are 4 screws holding the pull--start cover on.
But be warned that if the spring comes out, it can be a sod getting it back in - take care.

Bet you wished you'd got the electric-start version?

Thank you, I had opened the housing, but don't know what to do from there. It seems like maybe the spring is busted inside, by the way it turns. How do I open the inner housing to get to the spring and such?
Mmm, if the spring broke you can't reasonably fix it - order a replacement.
In fact, with most modern consumer-products your best bet is often to replace what doesn't work...
Unless you can identify a fault that could be fixed?

.  That spring may still have a lot of tension on it and can be very sharp. Be VERY careful when disassembling. Goggles and leather gloves minimum. Keep valuable body parts out of the line of fire.
Yes I know, I've helped people with these things before.
