years ago in popular science or popular mechanics i saw an ad for plans to build a low altitude saucer shaped vehicle. used a vw engine or one similar. does anyone have or know where to find a set of the plans?

I think I remember what you are talking about.  It was a hovercraft that floated on a cushion of air along the ground.  I don't remember what issue it was or even the time period but I tend to believe that it was in the '60's.

Google has most back issues of PS and PM going way back in their books section.  They've scanned every page and you an thumb thru them just like when you were waiting for your haircut.

thanks it's neat, but the ad said it was capable of 100' high.
Anything that will get 100' high using and engine from a vw will need a pilots license.  Unless I'm mistaken, but I don't think so.

It might be possible to scale up this idea.

There's a paper model glider with some ideas you might use.
