The result is a "gravelly" or grinding sound. The power amplifier and its preamplification stages also influences the output by injecting its own distortion.
To mimic the sound that a particular guitarist has, you may need to duplicate his/her equipment to achieve the end, because each piece of equipment injects its own component to the final sound, including both the amplifier/effects and the specific guitar.
More over, guitarists often use multiple effects, so what you're hearing may not simple be distortion, but it may combine compression, expansion, chorus, and other effects to achieve the sound.
You do not have to be good to use one. In fact, many really lousy musicians use them to mask their ineptitude. In fact, it is in my 37 years of guitar playing experience the first effect pedal that most guitarists purchase.
this was ment to be sent to you i did it wrong on accident though
how do people use more than one pedal like i knows theres a mat or something underneath do all of the hooks connect to the mat and then finnaly the mat connects to the amp and input of your axe.
But if you can the search "guitar effects". You will find lots of sites that help you build your own effects. Even if you don't want to build your own what you are looking for is the mp3 sample pages. Thats where they have mp3's of what the effect sounds like. That will let you pick what sound you are looking for.
Sometimes it's not the effect but it's the amp. I hate to admit it but they really do sound different. And the guitars sound different also so it's not just the effect you're looking for but a conglomeration of all of it.
Research the sound you are looking to play. Then work on your technique.
Good luck.
