how do you keep snakes out of my chicken house/pen?

i have recently started raising chickens and i have bitties in my chicken house and twice now a snake has gotten into the house and eaten bitties, the last one is resting peacfully along with the bittie in the garden next to the squash. any suggestions on how or what to put around the pen and house to keep snakes out?

Fine mesh chicken wire all round and over the top buried at least 6 inches in the ground.

Do you know what kind of snakes?
From what I know about chickens, ( I had a bunch of them years ago) the place where they feed is often infested with mice. The mice show up for the leftover grain and such and take up living where ever they can. Chickens will eat mice if they can catch them, and often do, but the mice are pretty good at hiding in the places the chickens can't get to. So, you have a population of mice that is confined to narrow places. This comes to the attention of passing snakes who just happen to like eating mice. The snakes get into areas that the chickens can't so they are doing you a favor by keeping down the mouse population. If the snakes aren't of a poisonous variety they will not harm the chickens in any way. There are a few snakes that eat eggs but they usually are tree snakes and would not bother with a chicken coop unless they have learned a new technique. A snake big enough to eat a chicken is possible but those you would notice. The only other target that would be possible would be chicks, but most people don't let the hens raise the chicks. So, the snakes are your friends most likely, and they are more afraid of you than you are of them. They are saving you money and preventing mouse damage, I would leave them alone and just co exist with them.

A snake won't eat chickens? OK.

When I was a kid a snake crawled through chicken wire into a pen with our baby chicks. It ate one and wasn't able to get back out of the wire because it was too fat.

I did mention that they can eat chicks, but most people keep chicks in a special enclosure with a heat lamp and such. It would take a pretty big snake to eat a full size chicken.

You'll have to close EVERY opening that they can get into.
