how do you set the color on a patch before you sew it on?

I am trying to sew on a patch to my nursing uniform (which is starck white) and I don't want it to bleed, I heard there is a formula but not quite sure what it is. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

just like setting colour with other fabrics:
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 2 litres of water
soak for about 30-60 minutes. repeat until solution has no colour taint. rinse. dry. apply.

An overnight soak in a strong solution of cold salt water is an old dye-setting formula. Afterwards, it's good to wash and dry the patch just as you wash and dry your uniform, to be sure it's all the way preshrunk. Or you could use velcro to attach the patch, so you can remove it when you wash the uniform - this may be extra-handy if you ever need to bleach your uniform. Sewing the velcro on can be a bit of a pain, but gives the best results in the long run.
