how to hook up phone jack?

WagonD16 days ago

I hope there is someone to help me with this. The phone company just left a new jack to install to replace the old one that wasnt working when i opened up the wall jack this is what i found pic 1 i have tried endless configurations and nothing. there are lots of mention of wires with stripes and dashes all the wires are solid colors. Each jack has the colored wires in a different configuration Im totally stumped any help would be appreciated. Phone company will charge $ to fix if the issue is not theirs. the downstairs phone (same line and phone #) pic b looks like this and the new jack is pic c what is the problem. does it matter if the wires are different colors or am i trying to match position on the jack more than colors I hope im making sense I have matched the colors to colors and no luck. The wires are old very old i think but what is totally confusing is that there is also a cable with only three wires with a red green and yellow no blue only a rip cord.

what is meant by tip and ring does this effect where i place the wire on the screw, some of the screws have 2 small washers under the head of the screw :$

thanks in advance

If the home is a little more modern then it is probably wired with Cat5 cable. This has 8 cables and can be a little confusing.

Phone lines only use 2 wires per line. The wires for the main line are the red and green lines on older cables and jacks. If there's a second line like a business line, then it will usually use the yellow and black wires.

Cat5 cable uses striped wires. This adds to the confusion, but it's really quite simple. As in the picture, attach the white wire with blue stripes to the green terminal screw on the phone jack.

Attach the blue wire with white stripes to the red terminal screw on the phone jack. Plug the phone into the jack and if you did it right, there will be a dial tone.

There will be colored wires coming out of the wall, and colored wires on the screw terminals inside the jack. Match the colors.
Yes, it really is that easy.
Indeed it is that easy, almost.  The only problem that can come up is if the wires found inside your walls are, for some reason, not the usual colors.

I found the images below via a google search.

The guy in the second picture is doing it wrong.
