How about pressing the power button?

The easiest way is Unix-style. Open Terminal, use ps -u <username> to find their processes, and just kill them. If you aren't the admin, you'll need to use sudo to get admin privileges in order to kill another user's processes.

You'd need to establish a session on the machine in order to do that though (even if via LAN). That's not so easily done, is it?

Can you log-in to the macbook while they're using it?
