how to remove the bark from a branch when making a slingshot? and the algae ... and the moss... on it.

Well, what you want to do is soften the bark rather than shaving it right there. Place the y branch into some hot water for about 30 minutes. After a while the bark on the branch well start to soften, and will be ready to shave. I suggest using a strong wood rather than weak skinny branches.
Most folks don't use a branch from a tree with a gross bark or stuff growing on it. Still, if you've got no choice, a knife or a rough wood rasp (file) will take it off.

Take a knife and slide it along the surface (whittling, for the uninitiated). Repeat the process until all the bark has been stripped. (Works for algae and moss too, but you might want to get a different stick that doesn't have those on it...)
Whittling is so fun! It seems lame at first, but it is way addictive.
